Portugal and the Algarve, in particular, are known for their beaches, luxury resorts and golf courses. However there is more to the Algarve then just this. Head just a few kilometres inland and you will discover a whole different kind of paradise.
A more traditional and rustic Portugal can be found in the countryside. Typical old towns, churches and town squares offer a great insight into the country’s past. Nature is as diverse as it is beautiful, while in the countryside rivers and lakes provide a pleasant alternative to sandy beaches. Simply drive 10 or 20 minutes from the coast, and you’ll reach areas such as Boliqueime, Loulé, Goldra, Santa Bárbara de Nexe, São Brás de Alportel and Estoi, lovely villages in which you will find tradition, tranquillity and open space. Land and villa prices here can be very attractive compared to prices in coastal areas and luxury resorts. The laid-back lifestyle of the countryside, with more traditional style houses, situated on large and private plots, away from touristic towns, yet still close to amenities and beaches, appeals to more and more potential buyers.
